Samsung hasn’t even launched the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4, but we’re already hearing about its next set of foldable phones. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 are the latest Samsung phones to visit leak land.
Before you get too excited, the rumor isn’t a tell-all leak with the complete spec sheet of the phones. However, we do get some information about the possible camera setup on the Z Fold 5 and Samsung’s sales strategy.
Fewer Samsung foldables in 2023?
According to a report by Korean publication The Elec, Samsung is drastically cutting shipping targets for the Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5. That means the company plans to sell fewer foldable phones in 2023 compared to this year and the previous ones.
Specifically, Samsung seems to have set an overall target of 10 million units for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5. Of this, only two million units of the former are expected to be circulated by the company. It’s believed that Samsung would be betting bigger on its clamshell, the Galaxy Z Flip 5, and is targeting shipments of eight million units for the phone.
In comparison, Samsung has reportedly set a target of 15 million units for the upcoming Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4.
Samsung’s lowered targets for its 2023 foldable phones are attributed to rising raw material prices, the prolonged Russia-Ukraine war, and slow economic growth. Of course, it’s too early to predict the phones’ actual production and shipment targets since they are almost a year away from launch. For all we know, Samsung could up targets by the time the launch nears.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 leaked specs
The Elec has also shared some specs of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. As per the outlet, the phone will house three cameras at the back, including Samsung’s 50MP GN3 sensor. The phone could also have a 12MP front-facing shooter.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 is also expected to house three rear cameras, including a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultrawide shooter, and a 12MP 3x telephoto lens. Perhaps, Samsung would keep the same setup on the Z Fold 5.
Other than that, the outlet says that both the Fold 5 and Flip 5 should run on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC that’s expected to debut at the end of the year. This is sort of obvious. Samsung always uses Qualcomm’s flagship SoCs for its foldable phones, and next year should be no different. We’ll maybe have a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 2 chip by then and get that one on the phones.
